Third Grade Expectations:
S- Show Safety

Concepts and Expectations
Communication Arts:
Each week, students will be introduced to a set of communication arts skills. To enhance, assessments of these skills will be given every other Friday. In addition, students will be given a spelling pre-test on Mondays with the final on Fridays. If a student receives a 100% on the pre-test, they will not take the Friday final.
Reading:
Through whole and small group instruction, students will build the following:
·Comprehension
·Accuracy
·Fluency
·Expand vocabulary
Language/Writing:
Through whole and small group instruction, students will compose text using the 6-traits of writing process. This process includes the following traits:
·Voice
·Organization
·Ideas
·Conventions (spelling, punctuation, etc…)
·Excellent Word Choice
·Sentence Fluency
Math:
Students will be building upon a variety of mathematical skills. The skills include the following:
·Number and operations
·Algebraic Relationships
·Geometric and Spatial Relationships
·Measurement
·Data and Probability
Nightly math fact practice is crucial to your child’s success. We will be incorporating fact practice in our daily routine, unfortunately this is not enough exposure for your child. Nightly fact practice is highly encouraged to assist in your child’s learning. Each night there
will be a fact homework sheet to be completed, checked, and signed by an adult at home. This will need to be returned to school the next day.
Social Studies:
Students will develop an understanding for the eight strands of social studies. The eight strands are:
1.Citizenship– Our beliefs and principles help make up our national identity.
2.Geography – Location, place, maps, and more
3.Social Studies Skills – Many special skills are needed to better understand the world around you.
4.Government– People work to make the laws that influence our lives.
5.History – Time, chronology, years, and dates
6.Science, Technology, and Society – inventions, computers, and ideas
7.Culture – Holidays, traditions, and stories
8.Economics – Wants and needs, goods and services
Science:
Students will build knowledge of the following scientific areas:
1.Investigating questions – scientific process
2.The engineering process – technology and design process used to develop new inventions
3.Plants and animals – life cycles and adaptations
4.Ecosystems and Interactions – food chains and environmental changes
5.Changes to Earth’s surface – landforms, erosion, and natural disasters
6.People and resources – natural resources and recycling
7.Water and weather – water cycle and weather
8.Earth and it’s moon – rotation of Earth and moon, day/night, seasons, and moon phases
9.Matter – states of matter, physical properties, and changes to matter
10.Simple and compound machines – making work easier
Class parties/birthdays:
There are many things to celebrate throughout the year. Parent volunteers will need to send or bring treats to school by 1:45 on the day of the party. All activities will be coordinated and planned by Mrs. Shrader.
